About SOLAR
Idealism. Realism. For a better future.
SOLAR stands for Sustainable Off-grid Living-labs for Autonomy and Research. Stichting SOLAR is a non-profit foundation (stichting) based in Pijnacker, the Netherlands.
What started as an escape from reality grew into a feasible vision: a passion project that has evolved into something more. We are proud to have the chance to make society stronger and help create a better future.
Our purpose
According to our statutes, Stichting SOLAR aims to:
• promote sustainable knowledge development and social innovation;
• set up, manage and open up a public knowledge archive;
• initiate, carry out and facilitate research and practical projects on sustainability, nature management and autonomous living systems;
• promote education, awareness and community building around nature, the environment and sustainable development.
The foundation serves only the public good and has no profit motive.
How we work
• We develop and manage a digital knowledge platform: the SOLAR Archive.
• We collect, structure and publish information and research results.
• We organise and facilitate research programmes and living labs: real places where we build, test and document sustainable, autonomous living systems.
• We work with educational institutions, civil-society organisations and knowledge partners.
• We produce publications, events and educational activities.
In principle, all research results and knowledge we develop are made public, except where the law or privacy prevents it.
Our plans for 2026–2029
Start-up phase (years 1–2): setting up the organisation, developing the digital archive, agreeing frameworks for collaboration and starting pilot projects.
Expansion phase (year 3 onwards): scaling up research, strengthening our volunteer structure, making our funding sustainable and publishing more.
Continuity phase: safeguarding quality and transparency, reviewing our policy regularly and embedding our work in society.
The board reviews progress every year. Read more in our policy plan.
Board
Stichting SOLAR is governed by a board of three unpaid members. Together they are responsible for policy, financial management, annual reporting and making sure our resources are spent on our purpose. Board members receive no pay for their work; they are only reimbursed for costs they actually incur.
