The SOLAR Archive
Open knowledge on sustainability and autonomous living, for everyone.
What is the SOLAR Archive?
Knowledge isn't property; it's a shared good. That's why we are building an open, public knowledge archive on sustainability, nature management and autonomous living systems at archive.solar. Setting up, managing and opening up this archive is written into our articles of association: it is one of the foundation's core tasks.
The archive is built as a map. Every entry gets its own place, so you can zoom in from a broad subject down to the sources and supporting material. That way you can see at a glance what is already known, and where the gaps are.
The archive is in English, so people all over the world can read along and contribute.
Who is it for?
Students and researchers looking for well-organised knowledge with sources.
Makers and communities who want to build sustainably or off-grid themselves.
Policymakers and funders who want to see what is known, and what is still missing.
Anyone curious about how we can live more sustainably and more independently.
Where does it stand?
archive.solar is online, but still very much under development. You can already look around as a guest, without an account and without an email address. Many subjects are still empty and waiting for their first entry. We're also still working on the site itself, so expect regular changes.
The SOLAR Archive is the foundation's first project to go online. It lays the groundwork for everything else: first gather the knowledge, then run small trials, and only after that build bigger. What we learn in our projects, including what does not work, belongs in the archive in the end. The archive is organised by the planets of our solar system; that's why our hubs carry the names of gods, so you don't confuse them with the planets in the archive.
How can you contribute?
Look around and read along. Anyone can explore the archive as a guest.
Create an account and contribute. With an account you can submit entries yourself and help review other people's entries, so the quality stays high.
Become a volunteer. Help fill the archive, find sources, check entries or translate texts. Sign up as a volunteer and choose "The SOLAR Archive".
Donate. On our donate page you can give specifically to the archive. Stichting SOLAR is a non-profit foundation, but it does not have ANBI status. Your gift is therefore not tax-deductible.
Give feedback. Spotted a mistake or missing something? Email us at contact@stichting.solar.
Open knowledge
In principle, we make the research results and knowledge we develop public, unless the law or privacy stands in the way. The archive is our main means of doing that: reading is free and needs no account.
Licence: what can you do with the knowledge?
The content of the archive is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence. In short: you may freely share, use and improve the knowledge, including commercially, as long as you credit SOLAR as the source and share what you make with it under the same licence.
Sources by others in the archive, such as articles, photos or reports, fall under their own licence or copyright. Always check this before you reuse them.
How to credit the source: "Source: The SOLAR Archive, archive.solar, CC BY-SA 4.0"
