Asklepios: Health

Asklepios

To keep things clear, Stichting SOLAR has grouped all its future projects into themes. Asklepios covers the projects on health. Below you can read what the foundation plans to research.

Who is Asklepios? Asklepios is the Greek god of medicine, a son of Apollo who learned his craft from the wise centaur Chiron; his staff with a single snake is still a symbol of medicine today. His daughter Hygieia, goddess of health, gave us the word "hygiene". Our Asklepios projects follow her example: SOLAR treats or heals no one. We explore how healthy food, clean water and a healthy living environment help people stay healthy.

Preventive health and lifestyle

Stichting SOLAR researches prevention and healthy living environments. The focus is on lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and stress reduction, and on measuring the quality of air, water and food. Together with universities, the GGD (the Dutch municipal public health service) and other health partners, we share knowledge and develop public information. We don't provide treatment or care, and we don't do studies on people.

Mental health: prevention and awareness

The foundation researches the factors that affect mental health and social wellbeing, and uses educational programmes, training and digital tools to encourage awareness and self-care. This includes preventing stress, burnout and social isolation. Through building knowledge and providing public information, together with universities and health partners, the foundation contributes to a healthy and resilient society. This is prevention and awareness, not counselling or treatment.

Exploring health with universities

Stichting SOLAR wants to explore, together with universities, how our projects can contribute to health. We do not do clinical research ourselves: we don't develop medicines and we don't do studies on people or animals.

Measuring water and food safety

We want to research how we can regularly check the quality of water and food from our own systems, together with an accredited laboratory or knowledge institution. That way we know for certain that what we produce is safe. This concerns the output of Demeter (food) and Poseidon (water).
